Rtd. General Martin Luther Agwai has just been appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the 13th Governing Council of the University of Calabar, on Tuesday the 24th of August 2021 the Security organized a welcome parade in honor of the newly appointed Pro chancellor who is a retired Army general, he had previously visited Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Prof. Ivara Ejemot Esu and other traditional rulers in the state for familiarization.
General Agwai said that having served in the Nigerian Army for 40 years, he was happy to be appointed to play a role in the University of Calabar.
According to him, it was important for Council and Senate Members of the University to always approach issues with fairness and balance whenever they feel otherwise.
He expressed hope with the calibre of men and women in the Council and Senate of the institution, adding that with their collaboration and cooperation, UNICAL will achieve the best in terms of development and overall growth.
General Agwai assured the VC and the entire management of UNCAL of his desire and commitment to work with them as a team for the interest and benefit of the University.
Prof. Ivara Esu assured the Pro-Chancellor that, the problems of the institution would be tackled as soon as the State starts implementation of the resolutions of the last State Executive Council meeting, adding that the State had resolved to collaborate with the Nigerian Navy to build a Naval Base in the Great Qua River to checkmate the growing insecurity in the area.
According to him, the Naval Base would not only stem the incessant kidnapping but check other security vices bedevilling the Institution as well as checkmate those encroaching on the University land.
Biography of Rtd. General Martin Luther Agwai
Gen. Agwai grew up from a Christian home and was the President of Fellowship of Christian Students at Government Secondary School, Zaria in 1967. In his military career, he has held the positions of the Deputy Force Commander of United Nations Mission in Sierra-Leone, Chief of Training and Operations of the Nigerian Armed Forces and Director of Military Training at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.
He was the Nigerian Military Adviser at Harare, covering the whole of Southern Africa between 1993 – 1996. He was a Directing Staff and Chief Instructor at the Command and Staff College Jaji – Kaduna, Nigeria. Before becoming the Chief of Army Staff he was the Deputy Military Adviser at United Nations Headquarters.
General Agwai is a graduate of the Nigerian Command and Staff College, British Army Staff College, Camberley, United States Army Armour School and United States Defence University, Washington D.C, where he obtained a Master of Science in National Resource Strategy. His military awards include Force Service Star, Meritorious Service Star, Distinguished Service Star and Fellow of the War College. He was one time a Council Member of the University of Jos and is decorated with Nigeria’s national award of the Commander of the Federal Republic.
